Forensics

Stable isotope signatures are a powerful tool for the forensic scientist. They can provide information about the geographical, chemical and/or biological provenance of materials. Stable isotope analysis of hair, nails, teeth and bone minerals can provide important clues to the geographic origin of human remains e.g. by excluding particular countries or regions from further consideration. Isotope signatures also provide excellent 'chemical signatures' of drugs, explosive traces, fibres and other physical evidence samples, allowing them to be compared and possibly matched against later samples.
