Genetic manipulation is a powerful tool with potential for developing crops that produce seeds having increased total oil content or enhanced levels of specific oils. As well as having extensive experience in analysing the seed oils themselves, Mylnefield Lipid Research can also provide detailed lipid class profiles of the modified seeds or other plant parts for comparison with equivalent profiles of un-modified varieties. These Lipidomic studies can help to determine whether the genetic manipulation process has had any unintentional side effects on plant chemistry or metabolism. We can therefore provide an initial safety check of modified plants before they even leave the laboratory.
Mylnefield Research services can also offer a suite of molecular markers for marker-assisted breeding programmes and we have unrivaled connections to world leading research into plant transformation methods through the Scottish Crop Research Institute and excellent facilities for field and glasshouse trials of new plants.
